How Women and Men Create Video Blogs

by susanryoung on July 26, 2010

“Women are from Mars and Men are from …” Yeah, we know.

Each gender communicates in their own distinct way. This includes in Social Media and videos too. I’m happy to share my observations and experiences with how women differ from men in creating their videos, or vlogs.

Here’s a free resource for you. Take advantage of my 21-day video series “Speaking of Communication.” It focuses on Social Media, blogging, PR, writing and communication themes. Click on this link now for instant access http://www.getinfrontcommunications.com/

Overall, I think it’s important to feel good while shooting video. If that requires makeup and the perfect clothes then that’s what it takes.

I’ll usually go for a shirt with a collar, shave, and tidy up the study. But I also do live video and will film myself wearing casual attire if it matches the environment. It depends on what the message is.

I think there’s a lot of bad video out there! However, conversely, in male dominated industrial B-to-B, where I work, we are seeing more valuable video content based on the “How it works” theme, as opposed to appearance-heavy, brochureware style video.

We women are very critical of ourselves, aren’t we? I’d rather see anyone other than myself in a video! I had a prof tell me that I had a loquacious voice, and ever since, not only am I self conscious of my appearance, I assume that as I don’t have a broadcast quality voice, I should not be doing video.

Hi Beth,

It’s interesting to see how online B2B and B2C videos are evolving. Women are often beating ourselves up—a dose of self confidence could collectively launch all of us into this exciting market! The bottom line is that video isn’t for everyone…just as writing isn’t either. Being comfortable with how you deliver your message is critical. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Jesse,
Thank you for your insights on the video production. Tidying up–as you say is good—and knowing “you are the message” is important. I appreciate the male feedback :)
